Joot

Privacy

In short: Joot collects nothing. Your photos, notes and progress stay on your device. If you have iCloud switched on, they also live in your private iCloud database under your Apple ID. We cannot reach it. There is no Joot server, no accounts, no ads and no analysis of what you do.

What stays on your device

Everything you create in Joot is stored locally: albums, challenges, notes, tags, places and small preview images of your photos. The photos themselves stay in your photo library — Joot only remembers which ones they are.

Your photo library

Two things are worth telling apart here, because they are often confused.

Pictures you hand over. The picker you choose photos in belongs to the operating system, not to Joot. Joot sees nothing inside it — not which photos you have, not how many, not what you look at while scrolling. Only when you confirm does iOS pass on exactly the images you selected. No permission is needed for that.

Pictures Joot fetches itself. For that, Joot asks once for access to your library. It is needed to show a photo at full resolution later, to read the place it was taken, and to sharpen previews. You decide whether Joot may see all photos, only selected ones, or none at all, and you can change that in the iOS settings at any time. Without access Joot stays usable — it then shows the previews it saved.

What Joot keeps. For every picture you hand over, Joot stores a scaled-down preview in its own database, so albums load instantly and still show something when an original cannot be reached. You can switch this off in the settings, and delete previews already stored. The originals themselves are never copied and never uploaded.

iCloud

If you have enabled iCloud for Joot in the iOS settings, the app syncs your albums, notes and preview images between your devices through your private iCloud database. That database belongs to your Apple ID. We can neither view nor read it — Apple gives us no way to. Apple's privacy policy applies to processing inside iCloud.

Location

Joot does not ask for your location and does not track you. If a photo carries a place from when it was taken, Joot reads that place out of the photo and shows it on a map, on your device.

If you search for a place yourself, your search term is sent to Apple Maps so you get results. Apple handles that request under its own privacy rules. Without a search, nothing is sent.

Notifications

If you set up a daily reminder, Joot creates it as a local notification on your device, triggered by the operating system. No push notification service is used, and no device or push identifier is transmitted to us or to any third party.

What we do not do

The TestFlight beta

While Joot runs as a beta through TestFlight, Apple collects its own data as the operator of TestFlight — for example crash reports and which build you installed. The app provider sees only aggregated numbers and crash logs without your name. Apple's TestFlight terms cover the details.

If you send feedback by hand — through TestFlight or by email — we see what you write, possibly a screenshot, and your device type. We use it only to understand the reported problem and delete it once the problem is fixed.

Legal basis

Processing on your device and in your iCloud serves solely to provide the app's functions (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). Access to your photo library rests on your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you can withdraw at any time in the iOS settings.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction, data portability and objection, as well as the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. In practice all the data sits with you: you see it in the app and can change or delete it there.

Deleting your data

Deleting the app removes everything stored locally. What lives in iCloud can be removed under Settings ▸ Apple ID ▸ iCloud ▸ Manage ▸ Joot. Your photos in the library are untouched — Joot never owned them.

Children

Joot is not aimed at children and collects no data from which an age could be inferred.

Changes

If something about the app changes that affects privacy, we change this page and put a new date at the top. For substantial changes we say so inside the app.
